USS Yellowstone AD 41

My first ship 1984-1988. Just the begining more to come when I find my illusive box of loose photos.

I remember you...  Either I worked with you in my mooring station or mess cooked with you.  Yeah, I remember that day too.  Hey if you have a facebook account do a search for the USS Yellowstone.  Join us shipmate.  We've had a reunion, even had a boat trip to see the ship where she rest today.  (waiting to be towed to TX for scrap).

I was doing my mess duties for Captain Turner at the time of the collision. He spent hours reading his speech to me. He was up for Admiral at that time. I honestly did remember much of anything he said. He did tell me if there was anything I ever needed let him know. I still have his name plate from his door. Captain Turner was a great leader.

I really liked Capt Turner.  He was so family oriented.  Capt Bufford used to take us out for 29 days then pull us back in so we would  not get credited sea time and family separation "it would save the Navy some serious money". Capt Turner would deliberately stay over 30 days so we can. What a concept... a Captain that cared for his crew.  I wonder what he is up to these days. I'd love to shake his hand.  He left an imprint in my heart.  You're so lucky to have his name plate.  Funny how it's treasure to us but means absolutely nothing to those that did not get to know him.

Hey , Do you have a facebook account?  If you have one, do a search for USS Yellowstone and join the group.  it has almost 700 members.  We just got back last week from it's very first official reunion.  If you don't have an account you should just create one just to check it out.  There was only 7 of us from that time frame but it was way too cool to tell our sea stories and people knew exactly what we were talking about.  As a matter of fact I talked to one guy about an incident he described the same incident from the aft of the ship.  It was too cool.  BTC from the pipe shop. I can't remember his name for the life of me.  I'm going to find out tonight.
Glad my photos brought back memories.  A shipmate sent me this one to add to my collection.

        Hi Cat,
        Hard not to remember you:)
I was MM2 A-Gang and worked out of Aft Steering. I remember the roll, the Truckee, and don't forget when we nearly tore the Iwo Jima's guns off coming in one windy day. Damn we had a steady stream of skippers it seems. Remember when the love triangle went bad with the divers and one of their GF's. She was murdered in Florida.
The old Yellowstone was only around for 16 years but damn it has a history. I am glad I was a part of it.
Well I am coming back to Norfolk next week. Any of you shipmates still in the area send me an email. It would be great to have a beer and talk about the glory days of Mikes Bar in Naples, the Seamen Center in Gaeta and everything else in between.

        Take care,

        Rick

      Hello,

I was HT3 Davis and survived the 45 degree roll and the collision with the Truckee. Which do you remember and do you remember the dates of either incident?

Hi Shipmate!  I remember that day clear as day as well.  If you have a facebook account you've got to do a search for the USS yellowstone.  We have a reunion coming up at the end of the month. First since it was decommed...

Do you have any information and/or post-pics about the "I Survived the 45" roll in early 1985? Are you aware of the article at http://www.kudzumonthly.com/kudzu/jun02/TheRoll.html

I was on the ship between 1984-87. I remember you. I'll have to scan an old pic of me to help you possibly remember.
